Protecting Your Rental Property This Winter

While we experience the first storm of the season, now is the perfect time to start making sure your property is well protected in the coming months.

Make sure to ask the tenants if they are planning to vacate the property for any period of time during the winter and if they are, ensure that minimum heating is left on for an hour or two each day. This is to prevent pipes freezing should there be a cold snap.

A lamp on a timer is always a good idea; as well as ensuring that the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are tested on a monthly basis.

Ensure all windows are closed and locked, as well as all doors in the property. All locks on doors should be used, it is amazing how many people leave just the yale on, mortice locks are supposedly more difficult to break through so we would recommend using all locks available.

This is also the time of year when condensation is likely to appear. You can minimise this by making sure the property is well ventilated, such as ensuring trickle vents on the windows are open.
